The hidden legends of the mountains of Ordino
Among the mist, forests, and mountains of Ordino are born some of Andorra’s oldest and most magical legends. Very close to Llorts, the Tristaina lakes and mountain paths have inspired for centuries stories about the “dones d’aigua”, mysterious beings who protected nature, and about the Tamarro, the hidden creature that inhabits Andorra’s forests. Tales passed down from generation to generation that still seem to come alive today in the silence and tranquility of this authentic corner of the Pyrenees.

The legend of the patron saint of Andorra
Many years ago, a shepherd discovered a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary under a flowering bush in a remote area of Andorra. After attempting to move it to the church in Canillo, the statue mysteriously disappeared and returned to the same spot. This was repeated when the people of Encamp tried to take it to their church. Convinced that the Virgin wanted to stay there, the Andorrans decided to build a sanctuary at that site, which today is the Sanctuary of Meritxell. The Virgin was declared the patroness of Andorra in 1873 and officially crowned in 1921, becoming a symbol of protection and faith for the Andorran people.
