The Sounds of Nature: Learning to Listen Again

The Sounds of Nature: Learning to Listen Again

In the Ordino Valley, the landscape is not only something to behold. It is also something to listen to. Far from the constant noise of the cities, the sounds here are gentler, more natural and unhurried. Some remain throughout the day, while others appear for only a few moments. All it takes is stopping, opening a window or walking at a leisurely pace to discover that the mountains have a language of their own.

Water is one of the valley’s most distinctive voices. The Valira del Nord river flows through the landscape between the mountains, creating a soothing sense of calm. Its sound changes with the seasons: during the thaw and after rainfall, the water flows more powerfully, while at other times its murmur is quieter and more regular. At Apartaments La Neu, the river is part of everyday life, accompanying mornings, restful afternoons and nights in the mountains.

Alongside the constant sound of the water comes the wind, which moves through the forests and never sounds quite the same. Sometimes it barely stirs the leaves; at other times, it shakes the branches and seems to announce a change in the weather. When the wind settles, other sounds become easier to distinguish, especially in the early hours of the day, when birdsong gently breaks the silence and one call seems to answer another from different parts of the forest.

However, not every morning sounds the same. On cloudy days, birdsong may mingle with the first drops of rain. Little by little, the water begins to tap against the rooftops, trickle down the windows and merge with the sound of the river. As clouds cover the peaks and the landscape takes on deeper colours, the apartments become especially cosy. It is the perfect moment to make a cup of coffee, sit by the window and watch the valley change.

With the arrival of winter, the rain turns to snow and the surroundings change not only in appearance, but also in sound. Snow muffles footsteps, softens noises and creates a sense of stillness that is difficult to find elsewhere. As night falls, this calm becomes even more noticeable: movement fades, the mountains slowly disappear into the darkness, and the river, wind or rain become a gentle soundtrack before sleep. Here, resting also means allowing your ears to rest.

We live surrounded by phones, engines, conversations and notifications that we often no longer even notice. The mountains offer us an opportunity to change this soundscape and pay attention once again to the simple things. At Apartaments La Neu, we believe that a stay in the Ordino Valley can also be an invitation to listen again: to our surroundings, to the silence and to our own rhythm. Because sometimes, all it takes to disconnect from the noise is to open the window.
